Leigh Academy

Key Project Info:

  • Client: Leigh Academy Trust
  • Value: £20m
  • Dates of engagement: 2020 to 2021
  • Contractor: Bowmer and Kirkland

This new school is being built on an old market garden site that borders the railway.

As the new construction work is set well back from the railway boundary, the contractor approached RAD for advice about whether the work posed any risk to the rail interface.

RAD reviewed the proposals and were able to confirm that nothing proposed had potential to impact Network Rail assets, which mean that a BAPA would not be required. The time saved by avoiding using a BAPA was key in meeting the project’s completion date.

As works have proceeded, the contractor has developed their plans and each time have given their proposals to RAD for review and comment to make sure that the objective of no works having any potential to affect Network Rail assets is maintained.

Where needed RAD have been able to respond quickly with adjustments to the method, such as relocation of mobile cranes, to ensure that works can continue without having to wait for NR reviews.
