Citicape Holborn Viaduct

Key Project Info:

  • Client: Dominvs
  • Value: £250m (development value)
  • Dates of engagement: 2021 – 2023
  • Contractor: McGee

McGee had secured the enabling works at this prestigious site with a proposal that included 5nr hand dug caisson piles excavated through the disused Holborn Viaduct station platforms, just north of the modern City Thameslink station. Their scope also included demolition and the forming of the basement box.

McGee asked Rail Asset Development to help them how to engage with Network Rail to secure the required approvals for this challenging scope. We took the CEM role for all works outside the NR Thameslink tunnel itself, and gave advice on how to progress the work inside the tunnel as well. This included guidance on how to assemble a team with the right experience to deliver the enabling works required, which included alterations to signalling and the emergency radio systems.

Being the tunnel that serves the Thameslink service, working hours are very restricted, and possession opportunities almost non existent, so we worked with the tunnel CEM (RBG) to make sure that the proposals were honed until the impact on the NR assets was minimised.
